Facebook Rolls Out ‘Donate’ Button for Nepal Earthquake

After launching its Safety Check update for people who suffered in the Nepal earthquake, Facebook has now rolled out the Donate button for relief work in Nepal.

The button is visible right on top when you log into Facebook. You can either click on donate or simply go to learn more to get information about the organisation to which Facebook plans to donate.

The learn more page shows that Facebook will match your donation (upto $2 million) to the Nepal earthquake relief work and it will be given to the International Medical Corps, which is a global organisation.

The options to donate are Rs 500, Rs 1000, Rs 2500 and Rs 5000. You can choose to donate a higher amount as well for Nepal earthquake relief.

According to Facebook, “International Medical Corps’ emergency response teams are operating mobile medical units to deliver critically needed medical care and medicines to the regions hardest-hit by the earthquake.” The team is giving out “hygiene kits, water purification tablets and other supplies to keep families healthy.”

So far over 4310 people have died in the earthquake in Nepal with over 8000 people being injured. The death toll in Nepal is likely to rise as many remote villages are still believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Facebook had also launched the ‘Safety Check’ feature which tracks people (based on profile information or any other check-in updates) in an area that has been struck by natural disasters. Users in the area will be prompted by Facebook to update their status as safe and should do so to let their friends knows of the same.

Google also activated its ‘Person Finder’ tool to help track missing persons in Nepal. You can access the tool here.

Person Finder is a free tool that helps friends and family members search for missing persons after a calamity. People can request and provide information about missing persons on the site. Search is also available through SMS in India and the US. Users just have to text “search ” to +91-9773300000 in India or +1-650-800-3978 in the US.

OnePlus One Goes Invite Free Globally Forever

If you are waiting for an invite to buy OnePlus One smartphone, you need not wait further. OnePlus just announced to open sales globally including India. Both 16GB Silk White and 64GB Sandstone Black will be available for purchase through official website globally and through Amazon.in in India without an invite.

OnePlus on its official blog, said, "Since the early days, our company has changed quite a lot. We’ve grown to over 700 employees and have sold over one million OnePlus Ones worldwide. We’ve also learned an immeasurable amount from all of you. We pour over your comments on our forums and social media and soak in the feedback you give us at events all around the world. We try to not just listen, but also act on these lessons. Your feedback has resulted in a wider range of accessories, better logistics options and an evolution from invites to pre-orders to Tuesday Open Sales. Now, we’re taking it one step further.

That’s right. In our first big celebration of the One’s successful year, we are opening up sales globally for everyone, every day of the week. We have always wanted to put great products into the hands of more people. And, we now feel confident that we have matured enough to handle the increased complexity that comes along with opening up sales completely.

With the experiences we’ve gained with the One, we will be far more prepared to make the same transition with the OnePlus 2. Yes, the 2 will initially launch with invites. We’re committed to maintaining razor-thin margins in order to give as much value as possible back to our users, and this drastically increases our risk. The OnePlus 2 will bring the challenges that come along with a brand new product, and initially, our invite system will help us to manage that risk. It also helps us to be sure that every OnePlus 2 user gets the amazing experience that they deserve".

It is celebrating its anniversary by offering 75% discount on OnePlus Flip Covers and Premium Screen Protectors in USA/Canada, the European Union, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. For India it is offering flat 50% off on OnePlus JBL E1+ Earphones, OnePlus Flip Cover (White) and OnePlus Premium Matte Screen Protector.

WhatsApp for Android with Google Drive chat backup option

WhatsApp will now allow users to back up their chats to Google Drive directly, says a report in Android Police.

Users will however need the latest build of WhatsApp for this, which is version 2.12.45. This is not yet available on the official WhatsApp site or Google Play Store. You can download the build from APK Mirror by clicking here.

After you install the new WhatsApp update, you will have access to this feature via app's Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup, wherein a new screen shows up with the time of last backup done and a list of disabled or greyed out Google Drive Settings.

The Google Drive addition is the latest in a long list of changes that WhatsApp has seen over the past couple of weeks.

Recently WhatsApp’s had update to version 2.12.38 for Android with their Material design.

Installing/Upgrading GCC G++ 4.9 in Ubuntu/Linux Mint Machine

GCC GNU Compiler Collection is an open source command-line software designed to act as a compiler for GNU/Linux and BSD-based operating systems. It includes front-ends for numerous programming languages, including C, C++, Objective-C, Fortran, Java, Ada, and Go, as well as libraries for these languages.

With GCC you can configure, compile and install GNU/Linux applications in Linux or BSD operating systems using only the source archive of the respective program. However, users don’t need to interact with the compiler, as this is done automatically by the configure and make scripts.

The latest update GCC 4.9.1 is a bug-fix release from the GCC 4.9 branch containing important fixes for regressions and serious bugs in GCC 4.9.0 with more than 88 bugs fixed since the previous release. In addition to that, GCC 4.9.1 release supports OpenMP 4.0 also in Fortran, rather than just in C and C++

Installing GCC 4.9

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gcc-4.9 g++-4.9

Once installed, run following commands one by one to use gcc 4.8 instead of previous version.

sudo update-alternatives --remove-all gcc

sudo update-alternatives --remove-all g++

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc /usr/bin/gcc-4.9 20

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.9 20

sudo update-alternatives --config gcc

sudo update-alternatives --config g++

Now you can check the current version of gcc in your machine by giving the command

gcc --version

Google's Mobile Search Results on Android Now Lets You Install Apps

Google is introducing a new feature to its mobile search results on Android that will now prompt users to install an app if it has relevant content to the user's search query. Starting this week, people searching on Google can also discover your app if they haven’t installed it yet. The latest feature is aimed at helping mobile app developers, which will now benefit further from the expanded App Indexing program.

If the App indexing is implemented and the content searched in google is relevant to your indexed content from your app, the app install buttons will appear alongside links to normal websites and tapping on these buttons will take them to the Google Play store where they can install your app, then continue straight on to the right content within it.

The blog post says, "With the addition of these install links, we are starting to use App Indexing as a ranking signal for all users on Android, regardless of whether they have your app installed or not. We hope that Search will now help you acquire new users, as well as re-engage your existing ones,".

In addition to this, Google says the App indexing will work as a ranking signal for all users on Android, regardless of whether they have your app installed or not.

Google Lets You Search Your Android Phone by Simply Typing ‘Find my Phone’

If you misplace your Android phone in the car or leave it somewhere around the house, search engine giant Google can now help locate the smartphone. Using Google search on a desktop, users need to type in 'Find my phone' and an approximate location of the device will be shown, Google said in a post

"We've all been there -- you've searched under your car seat, tossed around the sofa cushions and you still can't find your phone. If you know where your computer is, you can now ask Google to find your Android phone from your desktop," it said.

The users just need to ensure that they have the latest version of the Google App on their registered device. The Android Device Manager will allow users to ring their device, using which they can locate their device. The phone will ring for five minutes, once the ring option is chosen. Users would also have to ensure that the smartphone's location services are on so that Google can locate it. The feature also allows users to lock and erase data off the device in case of theft or loss of the handset.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Based Cyanogen OS 12 Update Rolling Out to Micromax's Yu Yureka

Micromax's Yu Yureka smartphone has started receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop-based Cyanogen OS 12 (CM12S) update. The domestic firm's subsidiary Yu Televentures made the announcement on Thursday, saying the update has begun rolling out in phases, and should be completed over the next three days.

Commenting on the update, Rahul Sharma, Founder of Yu Televentures, said in an emailed statement, "The Cyanogen OS 12 update is a product of our passion and dedication towards reinventing and redefining the consumer experience and I am extremely excited to share it with our community."

Apart from the changes that Android 5.0 Lollipop brings (such as Material Design; new Quick settings; Android Runtime; revamped notifications; guest profiles, and support for new languages including Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu), the Cyanogen OS 12 update brings its own changes. These are the same that were described by Cyanogen when it announced the rollout of the update for the OnePlus One earlier this week.

One of the highlights of the CM12S is a new feature called App Themer, which gives extensive control on how the handset user interface looks. The feature notably helps users customise the themes of individual apps.

Cyanogen also introduced a new email app, powered by Boxer. The premium version of Boxer will be reaching out to all the Cyanogen users worldwide free of cost. The new email app now fills-in most of the features that were earlier missing from the built-in email app. Some of the functions included are exchange support, multiple account integration, canned responses for quick replies, and different LED settings for different email notifications. Swiping left or right on the message also leads to certain actions.
